photo of peter camejo Peter Camejo, Green Party gubernatorial and vice-presidential candidate and longtime progressive political activist, passed away this morning in Folsom, California at the age of 69 after a long battle with cancer.

"It is with great sadness and regret that I have to inform you that Peter Camejo died this morning," according to a statement this morning from The Camejo Family. "Peter decided that he would be more comfortable at home, and the doctors agreed. Arrangements were made, and ultimately Peter returned home yesterday. Peter's health had declined rapidly over the last two days due to the aggressiveness of his cancer and the strength of the drugs used to combat his disease. His wife was at his side when he passed peacefully this morning."

Peter is survived by his wife Morella, his daughter Alexandra, his son Victor, three brothers Antonio, Daniel, and Danny, and three grandchildren Andrew, Daniel and Oliver.

"Arrangements and memorial services will be announced at a later date. As a courtesy, the family requests that there be no calls at this time," the statement concluded.

Dina Padilla, the Peace and Freedom Party candidate for Congress in California Congressional District 3, has been sued along with Downey injured workers and Kaiserpapers.org website developer Vicki Travis by the Downey brownfield toxic site developer Stuart Lichter. Candidate Padilla has made a large part of her campaign the issue of cost shifting of injured workers' healthcare costs by self-insured employers and the insurance industry. Lichter who formerly worked for the Federal GSA has allegedly been developing highly toxic sites without properly cleaning them up. As a result, workers at the Downey site in Southern California have become sick from fungus and other toxic material. Following the suit, a hacker attack was also made on the www.kaiserpapers.org website which blocked much of the material and temporarily shut down Dina Padilla's campaign site as well.

Peace and Freedom Party condemns 'brutal' attack

A volunteer with the Ralph Nader for President campaign — and an official of the Peace and Freedom Party California State Central Committee — was beaten by police and hospitalized at the Republican National Convention here in what party leaders condemned as a "brutal assault on Barry Burgess and our liberties."

Burgess, elected to the Peace and Freedom Party Contra Costa County Central Committee and state committee in June, was attacked distributing literature for the Ralph Nader for President campaign, according to Kevin Akin, California State Chair, Peace and Freedom Party. Akin's statement follows:

Just when many people thought the threat of being sprayed with pesticides to eradicate the Light Brown Apple Moth was over because of two court decisions, we learn that the eradication program will continue.

1. Millions of sterile moths will be released over our neighborhoods beginning in 2009.

2. The California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) still plans to aerially spray “forested” and “agricultural” areas with a pheromone-based pesticide, but has not said where those areas are or what specific product they will be using.

3. Quarantines remain in place that threaten the livelihood of farmers and growers.

4. All from-the-ground pesticide applications will go on as planned - which include the widespread use of a dangerous pesticide called Permethrin and the mobile fogging of neighborhoods with Btk and Spinosad, two products that are used in organic agriculture, but are not appropriate for residential/urban settings.
