Eugene Ruyle, a Marine veteran, is the Peace and Freedom Party nominee in California's 10th Congressional District (parts of Contra Costa, Alameda, and Solano Counties).

Ruyle, a socialist, feminist, environmentalist, anti-racist, and anti-imperialist, supports both the Platform of the Peace and Freedom Party and the Green Party's Ten Key Values.

Recently retired after 35 years of teaching Anthropology and Marxism at Cal State Long Beach, he was active in the faculty union, the Peter Carr Peace Center, helped to found the Peace Studies Program at CSULB, and played an important role in the struggle to save Puvungna, the Tongva sacred creation center on the CSULB campus.

Currently, he is affiliated with the Institute for the Critical Study of Society at the Niebyl-Proctor Marxist Library in Oakland.

Ruyle's opponent, incumbent Ellen Tauscher, is a conservative Democrat. As an ally of the Democratic Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, Tauscher's top contributor in 2007 - 08 was Chevron, and overall, the pharmaceutical industry was her biggest financial backer (opensecrets.org).

Ruyle's campaign is designed to raise issues of peace, justice, and sustainability. His aim is to promote socialism, real democracy, the environment, feminism and racial equality.

Though the district's boundaries have changed many times, in 1920 socialist Upton Sinclair also ran in the 10th Congressional District (gathering almost 20% of the vote).
