This statement on so-called guest worker programs was adopted by the State Executive Committee on June 1, 2012.
The Peace and Freedom Party stands for the right of all workers to organize and unionize. This includes all immigrant workers regardless of status. The "guest worker" cannot exercise that right because he or she is under contract to a particular employer or a particular industry. If the employer decides to terminate the guest worker, that worker has no recourse and faces immediate deportation. We believe that all workers have the same interest and reject programs such as the guest worker program that divide us. We support the right of all workers to cross borders freely without fear of unfair treatment, incarceration, and deportation.
Peace and Freedom Party is opposed to any guest worker program because it forces undocumented workers into an abusive relationship with their employers and they are not allowed to freely move from job to job. They need to be able to join with others to form or join a union that will negotiate for better wages, benefits and working conditions. We are for amnesty for all undocumented workers and their families.
