National governments responded to the 2008 financial crash with a series of unprecedented bank bailouts and stimulus spending measures. These steps have only created new contradictions, with the latest stage of the crisis being driven by sovereign debt fears caused by mounting budget deficits and debt. Spurred on by the pressures of the global financial markets, governments internationally are imposing brutal austerity programs, making the working class pay for the crisis through cuts to public spending, wages, jobs and living conditions.

A Marxist analysis demonstrates that the cause of these developments lies within the nature of the global capitalist system itself. Resolution of the crisis requires the overturn rather than the reform of the system. This requires the building of an independent political movement of the working class on an international basis armed with a revolutionary and socialist perspective.

Admission is free.

Oscar Grant III was executed by Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) officer Johannes Mehserle on Jan 1, 2009 at the Fruitvale station just outside of Oakland. Due to massive action in the streets by the people, Mehserle was arrested and became the first officer ever charged with a murder they committed on the job. His verdict will be coming out any day now. If he gets anything less than 2nd degree murder then there has been no justice. If he gets off then there is precedent set that a white officer can murder a black man in cold blood in front of a hundred people and get away with it.

State workers to gather at Capitol on June 30
8:19 AM - June 17, 2010

Thousands of Local 1000 members will gather on the west steps of the Capitol on June 30 to show elected officials the value of state workers and the work we do.

The theme of the lunchtime rally is "We are California" - as we not only provide vital services for all Californians but we are active members of our communities. The event also focuses on Local 1000's call for a balanced budget solution - not one that focuses solely on cutting valuable services and punishing state workers.

Wednesday, June 30

Two months after the explosion of BP's Deepwater Horizon oil rig, which killed 11 workers, the world looks on in shock as the Gulf of Mexico is poisoned with millions of gallons of toxic oil. Hundreds of thousands of jobs are affected. Entire species may be wiped out, and untold damage inflicted on fragile ecosystems. The long-term consequences are incalculable.
