The Grapes of Wrath (1940, Henry Fonda, Jane Darwell)
Tom Joad’s travels and travails during the first Great Depression. Based on the novel by John Steinbeck. Gritty, realistic account of extreme poverty, hopelessness and hope. Fonda’s acting is as superb as the script. Memorable quote: “Rich fellas come up and they die, and their kids ain't no good and they die out. But we keep coming. We're the people that live. They can't wipe us out. They can't lick us. We'll go on forever, Pa, because we're the people.”

Frida (2002, Salma Hayek, Alfred Molina)
Based on the life of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo (married to another artist – Diego Rivera). More personal than political, Kahlo was a communist sympathizer and supporter (and perhaps lover) of Leon Trotsky. Hayek lends an excellent portrayal.

Land and Freedom (1995, Ian Hart, Rosana Pastor)
Set during the Spanish Civil War, leftists battle the growing forces of fascism as well as the authoritarian ideologues among their own. A sad, beautiful film.

Erin Brockovich (2000, Julia Robert, Albert Finney)
I’m sure that a lot of feminists object to 130 minutes of Julia Roberts running around in mini-skirts and low-cut blouses. And it’s even worse that Brockovich wound up being a (egad!) Democrat. But it’s a good look at our injustice system and how the capitalist system promotes the polluting of our planet. Memorable quote: “That's all you got, lady. Two wrong feet in fucking ugly shoes.”

River Queen (2005, Samantha Morton, Kiefer Sutherland)
Drama, romance, family, liberation and war! A battle-filled account of Britain’s imperialist occupation of New Zealand’s Maori population. I’m not sure how true the actual events are, but this is an exciting and emotional film.
