Four StarsBattle in Seattle (2007, Martin Henderson, Michelle Rodriguez)
This is an actual movie about the 1999 WTO protests where activists shut down much of the city and seriously disrupted the imperialist’s gathering. I had low expectations for this movie and criticism of it from actual participants is loud and clear. But, while it tries to show several sides, it is clearly a sympathetic portrayal of the activist left. The police brutality depicted is intense and infuriating. This is a must see.

Four StarsRight America (2009)
A documentary made by Alexandra Pelosi, daughter of the current Speaker of the House, but don’t hold that against her. This exposes the vile, racist and outright nutty thinking among many conservatives. Stunning in how it shows that most cartoon characters have more depth and intellect than the average Republican. Or even the above-average Republican.

Five StarsReligulous (2008)
Political comedian Bill Maher exposes the hypocrisies of faith. He focuses on American Christianity but includes Jews, Moslems and others in his biting satire. Unfortunately, the people who really need to watch this probably won’t. Memorable quote: “Religion is dangerous because it allows human beings who don't have all the answers to think that they do.”

Four StarsSemper Fi: One Marine's Journey (2007, Jeff Key)
A gay marine who fought in Iraq tells his story. Jeff Key plays himself in basically a one-man show. It probably took more courage for him to do this than to enlist in the first place.

Four StarsMiss Evers’ Boys (1997, Alfre Woodard, Laurence Fishburne)
In the 1930’s the American government helped to run experiments on black men with syphilis. Even though an outright cure was available, the tests continued and most of the patients died. Horrible events mixed with inspiring stories.
